if i use an apprpriate mounting plate (18mm for example) could i use this in a face frame cabinet as an inset door?

Because this is a wide angle hinge, Blum does not recommend using the special face frame adapter base for inset applications. (175H5030) You can use a larger 18mm frameless base (175H9190.22) and flush out the side of the cabinet to "make" an inset application.
