Abrasive paper, commonly known as sandpaper, is categorized by its grit size, which indicates the coarseness of the abrasive material. The grades range from very coarse (40-60 grit) for heavy material removal, to medium (80-120 grit) for smoothing surfaces, to fine (150-180 grit) and very fine (220-400 grit) for finishing and polishing. Extra fine grits (600 and above) are used for ultra-smooth finishes and delicate work.
