A disc tumbler lock works by rotating a series of discs into alignment using a specially cut key. The key's cuts correspond to different heights, rotating each disc to the correct position for unlocking. When all discs line up at the sidebar notch, the sidebar retracts, allowing the core to turn and the lock to open. Misaligned discs block rotation and prevent unlocking.
