ADA requirements for closet rods specify a maximum mounting height of 48 inches from the floor for unobstructed forward reach. If access is obstructed, the maximum reach is 34 inches. Rods must be operable with one hand, without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Additionally, there must be a clear floor space in front of the closet for wheelchair access.
