This item is fits in toward the front of 2 existing upper cabinet with a 36" wide opening. The existing cabinets will act as your side walls depending on your depth of cabinets. The liner that comes with the unit will provide you with remaining depth. The 6" depth is your outward projection depending on proper installation.
