Washers on screws are necessary when the material is soft, the hole is oversized, the load needs wider distribution, or the surface needs protection. A washer spreads clamping force and reduces pull-through, cracking, and surface damage. Many wood screws do not need washers, but metal, plastic, and slotted holes often do.
